Clinical significance of the isolation of Candidaspecies from hospitalized patients BJM
Magalhães,Yankee C.; Bomfim,Maria Rosa Q.; Melônio,Luciane C.; Ribeiro,Patrícia C.S.; Cosme,Lécia M.; Rhoden,Cristianne R.; Marques,Sirlei G..
In this study, we isolated and phenotypically identified 108 yeast strains from various clinical specimens collected from 100 hospitalized patients at three tertiary hospitals in São Luís-Maranhão, Brazil, from July to December 2010. The isolates were analyzed for their susceptibility to four of the most widely used antifungal agents in the surveyed hospitals, amphotericin B, fluconazole, 5-flucytosine and voriconazole. The species identified were Candida albicans (41.4%), Candida tropicalis (30.1%), C. glabrata (7.4%), Candida parapsilosis(5.5%), Candida krusei (4.6%), Cryptococcus neoformans (4.6%), Trichosporonspp. (3.7%), Candida norvegensis (0.9%), Rhodotorula glutinis (0.9%) and Pichia farinosa (0.9%). A higher isolation rate was observed in the...

Effects of propolis from Brazil and Bulgaria on Salmonella serovars J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Orsi,R. O.; Sforcin,J. M.; Funari,S. R. C.; Fernandes-JR.,A.; Rodrigues,P.; Bankova,V..
Propolis shows biological properties such as antibacterial action. This bee product has a complex chemical composition, which depends on the local flora where it is produced. Salmonella serovars are responsible for human diseases that range from localized gastroenteritis to systemic infections. The aim of the present study was to investigate the susceptibility of Salmonella strains, isolated from food and infectious processes, to the antibacterial action of Brazilian and Bulgarian propolis, as well as to determine the behavior of these bacteria, according to the incubation period, in medium plus propolis. Dilution of ethanolic extract of propolis in agar was the used method. Brazilian and Bulgarian propolis showed an antibacterial action against all...

Is community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) an emerging pathogen among children in Brazil? BJID
Paternina-de la Ossa,Rolando; Prado,Seila Israel do; Cervi,Maria Célia; Lima,Denissani Aparecida Ferrari dos Santos; Martinez,Roberto; Bellissimo-Rodrigues,Fernando.
ABSTRACT Background: Community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) is spreading worldwide, but little is known about the epidemiology of this pathogen in Brazil. Objective: To evaluate clinical and microbiological features of children with S. aureus infections admitted to a university hospital. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study evaluating the potential risk factors for CA-MRSA, and a retrospective cohort evaluating in-hospital clinical outcomes. To include patients with both community and hospital-associated infections, we screened the results of the microbiological laboratory tests from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2016. According to the phenotype, we classified the isolates in Methicillin-Susceptible S. aureus...

Susceptibility profile of Salmonella against the antibacterial activity of propolis produced in two regions of Brazil J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Orsi,R. O.; Sforcin,J. M.; Rall,V. L. M.; Funari,S. R. C.; Barbosa,Luciano; Fernandes,JR A..
Propolis antibiotic action has been widely investigated. This assay was carried out in order to observe the in vitro antibacterial activity of propolis against Salmonella enteritidis isolated from food and Salmonella typhimurium isolated from human infections. Propolis was collected by Apis mellifera in two regions of Brazil (Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte State; and Urubici, Santa Catarina State). Both strains survival percentage decreased with time of incubation in Ethanolic Extracts of Propolis (EEP), demonstrating bactericidal effect after 24 hours. It was also observed that EEP from Mossoró was more effective than that from Urubici. The control of the propolis solvent - 70% ethanol - was less effective than EEP, showing only a bacteriostatic effect. We...
